Total Lunar Eclipse over Mohakatino Hills

Taken: Tues 3rd to Wed 4th March 2026 (9:22pm – 2:36am)

I’m very glad that in the end I managed to get the eclipse image I had planned — it almost didn’t happen, with clouds coming and going throughout the night.

My original plan was to photograph the eclipse over Mt Taranaki, but even a week out the forecast was suggesting thick cloud for south Taranaki while the north looked much more promising. So I changed plans and drove a little over an hour north to a spot I’ve visited before, looking out toward the Mohakatino Hills in northern Taranaki.

I arrived just after sunset and set up two cameras. One tracked the Moon with a zoom lens at 200mm (which I had calculated would work well for a sequence like this — thanks to Dean for the inspiration). The foreground was captured separately with my other camera and my Laowa 15mm lens, which turned out to be perfect for this location.

It really was a roller coaster of emotions through the night — hope when the sky cleared, and frustration when clouds rolled through and threatened to spoil the plan.

The first Moon in the sequence was captured at 9:22pm, and the final one at 2:36am.

The foreground image was taken during totality at 12:05am, when the Moon turned a deep copper-red colour and the stars became much more visible.

A night I won’t forget anytime soon.

EXIF: 12 moon images at 200mm, 1 foreground image at 15mm.
