Milky Way over Syme Hut and Mt Taranaki
Taken: Thursday 24th July 2025 at 1am approx.
Story: To get this image I hiked 5 1/2 hours up to Fanthams Peak (Mt Taranaki) through deep snow and ice and dealt with temperatures well below zero (-15C windchill) and stayed at the North Island's coldest hut. It was the most difficult hike I've ever done due to the 20kg pack weight I was carrying and the soft snow that meant for every step I took I'd slide back down half a step, but the reward of getting this and other images in the end made it more than worth it.
The image is made up of a panorama of 78 images and took me an hour and 15 minutes to shoot the whole panorama.
Inside the hut it was literally freezing at -1 C and a big patch of ice on the floor. There's no heating at all in the hut, and the toilet is an outhouse long drop!
EXIF: 78 images at 30sec, f2.5, ISO6400, 28mm. (Star layer with NISI star soft filter same settings at 6sec).
